Franklin Township was settled in 1808, by James Morgan and Thomas Butler and organized June 7, 1820. It was formed from parts of original Wooster and Prairie Townships.  The map of 1822 shows Franklin Township as made up of its present location, except the northeast offset as shown on the present Wayne County map and without the south three tiers of sections of present Franklin Township. These three tiers of sections (running east and west) together with the part of present Prairie Township lying north of the Treaty Line is given on the 1822 map as Prairie Township.

There is no available record of when this was struck off as Prairie Township; we may be safe to assume that when Franklin Township was organized on June 7, 1820, the southern part was left stand under the name of Prairie Township, under Wayne County jurisdiction until Holmes County was organized.
